The Last Wish – read it and DO NOT play it!

As a gamer I am used to observing many changes in games following book’s plot. But I have never expected such difference.

The story began when I played the game “The Witcher” earlier this year. I really tried to pass through all levels but I grew bored to death somewhere near the end…and gave up. This game had such a good PR campaign and then the content ruined it all. But I thought “there should be something really fascinating in this book in order for it to be noticed”. I read a lot about the author, Andrzej Sapkowski, and some parts of the book and understood that the game has nearly nothing in common with the real thing. The extremely limited game engine and the pathetic RPG-like gameplay spoil the fun of it and creates a bad image of the book, although there are some blind fans of the PC-version.

This is when I decided to buy the book. I was not able to find it in my native language so I decided to find it in English. The delivery of “The Last Wish” to Bulgaria was around 20 days so I decided to wait some more. And voila! A week or two ago I saw that the book is translated from a Bulgarian publishing house(Infodar) and bought it immediately. The interesting thing is that it was not a translation from English but directly from the Polish original. This is easily noticed when reading because the constructions are not similar to the ones in English and yet transformed to be more easily accepted. My congratulations go to Vassil Velchev for the proficiency in the skillful translation!

I am glad that I have read the book because I was disappointed by the game(as I mentioned above) but the book is on an entirely different level. It is written in such a way that sometimes you forget about the main character and allow your imagination to move on the details. The most interesting thing is that they are not even stressed on, but mentioned somewhere in the text. Andrzej Sapkowski won a real fan here and I would recommend to all of you – read the book and leave the damn game. There is nothing in common, even though the author approved the plot of the game. Moreover, he approved it’s polish version, which is the reason for the forthcoming new release.
